The history of Basara temple dates back to the olden days when Sage Vyasa, the disciple of Mahabharata and Sage Vishwamitra came to a conducive environment and settled there after the Kurukshetra war. Due to the good environment in the Dandaka forest, they agreed to settle and start their livelihood. The place got the name "Vasara" because Maharishi Vyasa prayed there every time. The name was changed to "Basara" attributed to the regional language (Marathi) and a temple was constructed by the “Karnataka king Bijialudu”, the ruler of Nandagiri province during the 6th century. Muslim invaders invaded the temple destroying everything. Nandagiri ruler returned the temple idols during the 17th century.
